Geography: Where is Bahia?
The State of Bahia in Brazil
The State of Bahia is located in the Northeastern region of Brazil. The capital city of Bahia is Salvador. Located on a peninsula, Salvador was established in 1549 and became the first capital of Brazil. The first slave market in the New World started in Salvador in 1558. An estimated 5 million enslaved Africans were brought to Bahia from West Africa. Slavery officially ended in 1888. As a result, Bahia has a fascinating and complex history. Afro Brazilians deeply influence the culture, food and music of Bahia.
The music of Bahia inspired me to learn history and meet the wonderful people. Living here as an African American along with my wife who is Biana, I explore more in depth. I totally blend in with the locals, except when speaking. My stepdaughter's nick name for me is "Dora the Explorer" because I wander and try new things. I enjoy asking questions, looking around corners, going to the neighborhoods (barrios), meeting locals and going off the beaten path. No, I am not out tracking in the Amazon. I am a city kid from West Philadelphia just trying to figure out Bahia.
Litoral Norte (North Shore)
Litoral Norte is a stretch of beautiful beach communities in the state of Bahia, North of the city of Salvador. The communities started as small fishing villages. Over time, residential settlements grew around the fishermen. The immediate areas outside communities are still very rural. In 2022, there is a housing boom along the coastline. The residents are constructing, first homes, vacation homes and rental properties. Each beach community has a different character, some are working-class neighborhoods others are luxury resorts.
The best thing about living in the Litoral Norte are the variety of beaches. It's much like the New Jersey shore. Atlantic City would be similar to Salvador. Sorry folks, no casinos. However, great night life, restaurants, music and culture. Our beach, called Arembepe is more family oriented. It's great for children because there is a cove that lessens the impact of the waves of the Atlantic. When we want to get dressed and live luxury life, like Margate or Avalon, we choose Guaraguba or Pria do Forte with upscale restaurants and bars.
How about safety? Born and raised in Philadelphia, I traveled the streets growing up. In Bahia, I use street smarts at all times. Watch yourself and your surroundings, especially if you don't know the language. I don't go around being flashy, waving a new cell phone saying "Yo, What's Up?" I dress like the locals. Actually, there are more American brand names than I expected. For example, Nike and NASA shirts are popular. Moreso, be laid back and low key. Its Bahia! That's the vibe. I have found the Bahians to be friendly, excellent hosts and very curious about the United States. There is a mini celebrity status being an American here. I enjoy it!
